Our Obsession With Social Media

Friday, September 16, 2011

Our generation has become obsessed by social networking sites, and sadly, I am part of it. For those with smart phones, it is so incredibly easy to click on the app, and spend hours wasting your life reading about other people’s lives. I know that on my Facebook app, I spend a ridiculous amount of time refreshing my pages and notifications, as if someone liking my picture or status will mean I’m “cool” or noticed. And spending time reading about complete nonsense that has no effect on my life whatsoever. I often find myself reading statuses for hours, and finally thinking to myself “do I really care if such a person is eating a sandwich, or this random person I have never met is counting down the days to something?”. That something is NEVER even revealed. I see statuses all the time saying “TEN DAYS!! <3” and they don’t even explain. It drives me mad, and yet I can’t seem to stop or give up my Facebook account. So, I’ve decided to stop using Facebook for two whole days. It sounds so easy, but to the obsessive teenager, it might be difficult. I will document my “test” over the next few days and see how it goes!

4 Hours: I’ve been keeping myself busy, checking Twitter and email, and going to the gym. So far it hasn’t bothered me, or seemed like a gaping hole. I have been more aware of who is on Facebook lately too. I now see how many people would be socializing with each other at school if their app wasn’t up on their phone or computer screen. I have seen teachers discreetly coming to student’s desks and asking them to get off Facebook. Somehow the Facebook generation has turned into an obsessive and dismissive group of teenagers.

6 Hours and Counting: I have noticed, in the last 6 hours, that every website connects to Facebook somehow, usually with a like button to like their page to promote their business. The link is very tempting…which is exactly why businesses do it, right? They want to promote their business through one of the most used websites at the moment. I’ve also noticed that Twitter links are becoming a lot more common now. I’ve heard stirrings that Twitter will take over and Facebook will be left in the dust just like MySpace. I have both Twitter and Facebook, but I don’t think Twitter is as addictive as Facebook because you can’t do so many things: Like, post on someone’s wall, comment, tag, message, the whole shebang.

24 Hours and Counting: Over the past day, I have realized that school uses Facebook a lot now. At first it was just email, then texting teachers and texting games in class, but now, sports and clubs have pages. One of my classes has a Facebook page and we get grades for liking and commenting on posts. I didn’t realize how much I would be missing by not using the social networking site. Although, I have found that by not using Facebook, I have been reading more and conversing with actual people. If I was waiting around at school, usually I’d be on my phone, but I have been chatting and getting to know people, which is nice. As for the books, I hadn’t noticed how much time I spent online. I read a book in the time I haven’t been on the website.

48 Hours: It’s now been two days since I checked my Facebook page. In a few minutes, I will be back online. I know I have learned a lot from this “experiment” and yet the inevitable will happen, I will go back to the social networking. However, after being so aware of Facebook and how it’s affecting us, I think I will be more sensitive to when I check it. Sorry for rambling :) What do you think of Facebook?

Alex Reads Twilight

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Alex Day, aka Nerimon,  is a "YouTuber" who did a series of Vlogs, video blogs, where he read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. As he read the book, he recorded himself giving running commentary. This sounds a bit dull, but it is absolutely hilarious!

For the most part, there are two sets of people when it comes to the Twilight Saga: the die-hard fans and the people who hate the thought of a sparkly vampire who falls in love with a teenage girl. I was one of the fans, or "fanpires", swooning at the thought of Edward Cullen. However, Alex's videos made me realise that most of the book sounds a bit stupid. I'm not entirely sure how I will be a fan of the books now. I found myself laughing hysterically during the scenes where I used to go "aww", and although it may have just been Alex's amusing commentary. To watch the video of chapter one, click here!

P.S. I wouldn't recommend reading it in class...it's a bit awkward when you have headphones in and it looks like you are laughing for no apparent reason.

Film Friday: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; Part 2!!

Friday, July 15, 2011

Wizards, with wands ready, lined up with muggles and other magical creatures for the stroke of midnight. Anticipation was thick in the air and excitement evident in their eyes. This could only mean one thing: The last Harry Potter midnight premiere.

It was the best of all the Harry Potter movies, and it was my favourite by far. It was also my favourite of the books because of the intricacy of the plot. Although the plot line is riddled with darkness and doom, there was a light, comic relief, and a sadness which had me crying the entire way through the movie. At one point, my friend and I were crying so hard, we burst out laughing...not the best during the solemn and quiet scene.

The tag line "It All Ends Here"  was absolutely accurate, and I am so glad the epic finale went out with a bang.

To the woman who changed many lives forever through her extraordinary imagination, you have created a magical world which feels real to many fans, and nothing will ever compare. The ends are all tied up and the story is finished, but Harry Potter will live on in our hearts. It may be cheesy, but it is definitely true.

"As long as we have these books, there will always be a Dumbledore’s Army. Parseltongue will be a national language. Quidditch will be considered a real sport, and butter beer will be a favorite drink. Being called a witch will be a compliment, and mischievous students worldwide will “solemnly swear that [they] are up to no good.”" - Amber Skye at Reading Addict.

Waiting on Wednesday

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Waiting On Wednesday was created by Jill at Breaking The Spine. It's a weekly post where you share the books you can't wait to read! Check out the Waiting on Wednesday posts on my affiliate, Amber Skye's blog, Reading Addict! This week's Waiting on Wednesday post is about the upcoming novel, Ripple by Mandy Hubbard.

About the Book:

Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. Each day she goes to school like a normal teenager, and each night she must swim, or the pain will be unbearable. She is a siren - a deadly mermaid destined to lure men to their watery deaths. After a terrible tragedy, Lexi shut herself off from the world, vowing to protect the ones she loves. But she soon finds herself caught between a new boy at school who may have the power to melt her icy exterior, and a handsome water spirit who says he can break Lexi's curse if she gives up everything else. Lexi is faced with the hardest decision she's ever had to make: the life she's always longed for - or the love she can't live without? (from goodreads)

My Thoughts:

I can't wait to read this book! I love mermaid stories, and hopefully this novel will put a new spin on the old tale. It is set to be released in July.

Teaser Tuesday

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Teaser Tuesday is a meme created by MizB at Should Be Reading and it's open to everyone! Here are the instructions from my affiliate, Amber at Reading Addict:
-Grab your current read.
-Open to a random page.
-Share a couple of “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page.
-BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

"6,00 p.m.: I feel a bit sick. I've got a bit of hair that will NOT go right, in a minute I am going to cut it off. Also, I think I have knobbly knees. Maybe when I'm Mark's wife I could have fat injuected into them (possibly taken from my nose, so it would be a two-in-one operation...smaller nose and fatter knees all in one swift plunge of the huge, hypodermic, fat-extractor needle...er, I really do feel sick...)."
I absolutely love Lousie Rennison's Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series. It is completely hilarious and I don't think I've ever laughed out loud so much while reading a book...slightly embarrassing during a quiet class. Look out for the review soon!

Review: Abandon by Meg Cabot

Monday, May 2, 2011

Title: Abandon
Author: Meg Cabot
Series: --
Release Date: 2011
Page #: 304

New from #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, a dark, fantastical story about this world . . . and the underworld.
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.

Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.

But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

"...I'd just lain back inside my glass coffin and waited for the my handsome prince to come rescue me.
That's how I hadn't noticed the evil. Not the kind people like to pretend is real, the kind they tell ghost stories and make horror movies about.
But the real evil that had been roaming the halls of Westport Academy for Girls, looking for the sweetest, most innocent victim it could find
By the time I finally realized there are no handsome princes- that it was all up to me...that it had always been up to me- it was too late."

I am doing this week's Teaser Tuesday on a Thursday, because the book came out yesterday and I just couldn't wait until next week to post it! As far as I am concerned, Meg Cabot could be the Queen of any genre she liked. And so far she has proven to be very versatile with books ranging from the Princess Diaries to Ransom My Heart to Abandon. I have always found the story of Persephone to be intriguing, and the new, modern-day spin has rekindled my love for the myth.

The Mortal Instruments: Amber and Eliza's Cast List

Saturday, April 9, 2011

After finishing City of Fallen Angels and hearing that City of Bones is being made into a movie, my affiliate, Amber from Reading Addict, and I have been thinking about our perfect cast. Well, I say perfect, but we can't get the characters exactly right. They never match perfectly with the characters of the books, but we have tried to get it as close as possible.

Lily Collins as Clary Fray

Lily is the only person who has officially been cast, so we didn't see the point of bothering to cast someone else. At first, I was extremely upset, but as the news has set in, I have become more accepting of her. I think will curly red hair, like in this picture, she looks like an acceptable Clary.

Alex Pettyfer as Jace Wayland

Alex is as close to Jace as you can get! He's extremely attractive, tall, blonde, funny, and I can definitely see him pulling of the Shadowhunter clothes. Both Alex and Jace are amazing!

Logan Lerman as Simon Lewis

At first, I wasn't sold on the idea of anyone playing Simon. I have swiftly become a fan of Logan Lerman playing him though. I absolutely loved him in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and I can see him changing from a nerdy boy into a cool vamp.

Darren Criss as Magnus Bane

I fell in love with Darren after watching him on Glee! He is as close to Magnus as I think is possible, and he can pull off the crazy clothes and glitter.

Douglas Booth as Alec Lightwood

Douglas is pretty much my ideal Alec. He's definitely my first choice as the dark and intriguing Lightwood brother!

Katie McGrath as Isabelle Lightwood

We had a hard time casting Isabelle, but we finally came across Katie McGrath. I think she could be a great fighter and her dark intensity is perfect for Isabelle.

Troye Sivan as Max Lightwood

I always liked Max. I thought he was a cute little boy who knew more than he let on. I think Troye could play that well.

Ewan McGregor as Luke Garroway

Oh Ewan, you are amazing. I have loved him ever since I watched Moulin Rouge. I think the amount of different characters he has played show that he is a versatile actor and I think he would be a great Luke!

Julianne Moore as Jocelyn Fray

I'm not quite as on board with the idea as Amber, but I can see the resemblance to the Jocelyn in my mind. I can't find anyone better!

Viggo Mortensen as Valentine Morgenstern

Valentine was the only character that Amber and I disagreed about. She loves Viggo from The Lord of the Rings and can only see him as a good guy. I, however, can see him as the evil guy. What do you think?

Max Irons as Sebastian Verlac

Oh my, he is incredibly good looking! I can definitely see him as Sebastian from City of Glass.

Idina Menzel as Maryse Lightwood

Although I don't know how to pronounce Maryse, I think she is a tough character who is struggling inside. Idina Menzel would be great, in my opinion.

Jeremy Irons as Hodge Starkweather

I always thought of Hodge as the mentor and I think Jeremy would be a good fit. I also find it amusing that Max Irons is his son. :)

What do you think of our cast list? Let me know in the comments please!!

Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare!!

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Title: City of Fallen Angels
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: The Mortal Instruments
Book #: 4
Page #: 424
My rating: 4.5

City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever. Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. (taken from Goodreads)

CoFA Countdown!!!

Monday, April 4, 2011

City of Fallen Agels by Cassandra Clare is being released TOMORROW!! I am so excited that I can't even express my joy and anticipation in words. I've been wracking my brain, trying to figure out the answers to the teaser questions from the covers.

Who will be tempted by darkness? Simon or Jace maybe? Who is lost?? Is it Clary and Jace? Destruction or Salvation? Hopefully salvation from the evil that stole the person in the City of Lost Souls...It's too exciting!!

What do you think?

Here is my favourite teaser Cassandra Clare has released. It definitely does tease...

"Jace and Clary, midbook.

The alley and the music all fell away, and there was nothing but her and the rain and Jace, his hands on her... He made a noise of surprise, low in his throat, and dug his fingers into the thin fabric of her tights. Not unexpectedly, they ripped, and his wet fingers were suddenly on the bare skin of her legs. Not to be outdone, Clary slid her hands under the hem of his soaked shirt, and let her fingers explore what was underneath: the tight, hot skin over his ribs, the ridges of his abdomen, the scars on his back. This was uncharted territory for her, but it seemed to be driving him crazy: he was moaning softly against her mouth, kissing her harder and harder, as if it would never be enough, not quite enough —"

Review: A Year in Europe Trilogy- London: Robin and Kit

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Title: A Year In Europe Book 1: London: Kit and Robin
Author: Rachel Hawthorne
Series: A Year In Europe
Book #: 1
Page #: 192
Release Date: September 12th, 2000
My Rating: 3/5

Robin's falling fast for an English guy named Kit Marlin. There are just a few tiny problems: 1) She's living with him and his family in London for the year. 2) He treats her like a sister. 3) He has a gorgeous girlfriend. So she should just get over him and avoid a broken heart, right?

During Spring Break, I really got into a phase of reading cute, romantic, beachy-type books. Books where you can stop thinking and just enjoy a cute story. I don't know why I got into this phase- I think it's my summer-itis. My first beach read was A Year In Europe: London: Kit and Robin. The series is based on three best friends who spend a year in a Study Abroad program in Europe. Each of the girls has their own country and their own book in the trilogy.

The first friend, Robin, stays in London. When Robin gets off the plane, she finds that her "sister" for the year is actually a brother, she is shocked. To impress him, Robin speaks only in a whisper, to try to disguise her "hick" Texan accent.

Honestly, Robin bothered me. Throughout the book, I couldn't fathom why she had tried to hide who she really was. Kit, however, was extremely cute. He was understanding of Robin, and tried to help her acclimatize to her new surroundings.

Being from England, I found Robin's reaction to the language differences between England and America absolutely hilarious! My American best friend is also reading the book, and she is as confused as Robin.

Overall, the book was a cute, quick read, if a little annoying during some parts. I am giving this a rating of three masks.

Affiliate News and My Reason Behind It

Saturday, February 26, 2011

This week my affiliate, Amber Skye, has posted two reviews and a Waiting on Wednesday. Click HERE to be taken to Amber's blog, Reading Addict.

The first review was of The False Princess by Ellis O'Neal. The story is about a girl who thinks she is the princess, but later finds out she was just a stand-in to keep the real princess safe. Although it looks great, Amber's REVIEW says she was disappointed, and her high expectations were not met.

The second of Amber's reviews this week is Dark Mirror by M.J. Putney. The book looked fantastic...but after hearing about it from Amber, I have decided not to bother with this book. Click HERE to read Amber's review.

My Reason For Affiliate News:

In my opinion, Affiliate News isn't just about spreading the word about new books. I think it's a way to support your affiliate, and to help them to be notice.

My affiliate, Amber Skye at Reading Addict, doesn't actually need more followers as she has 300, but I still find it necessary to post about the goings-on over at her blog. Not only am I friends with her, but I think her reviews are fantastic. They are full of insight and I always trust her opinion when I am buying books or signing up for ARC tours.

Amber is also responsible for me creating a blog. She helped me set it up, and is almost my "blog mentor", if there is such a thing. I am thankful to Amber, and I find posting about her blog weekly helps me give back to her by getting her amazing blog recognized. I hope you enjoy her site, Reading Addict.

Film Friday: Red Riding Hood

Friday, February 25, 2011

I have come up with my own meme, Film Friday. Every week I will talk about a movie that is being adapted from a book. I will update you with news of the upcoming film. This week's topic is the upcoming movie, Red Riding Hood!

The movie is based on the book by author Sarah Blakley-Cartwright, which is based on the screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson. I am excited to read the book, and I hope the movie will be fantastic, seeing as it was made into a screenplay first.

When I first heard about the film, I though, ugh, Twilight has taken over again. I loved the Twilight books, but they seem to be making a lot of the same movies and books now. All centering around the love story between a real and fantastically creature. Also, I was worried it would be another take on Twilight when I heard that Twilight's director, Catherine Hardwicke, was directing this film, and a few of the cast members were being transplanted into the woods. It didn't help that the actor playing the werewolf auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen, and almost made it. However, I have decided to overlook the things that tie it to the Twilight Saga, and try to enjoy the movie as the seperate entity it is.

The lead character, Valerie, is played by Amanda Seyfried. I am looking forward to seeing her in this more serious role. I thought she did a great job in Dear John, which I much prefered to her more comedic roles in Mamma Mia and Mean Girls! The other lead, Peter, is played by Shiloh Fernandez, who, in my opinion, looks like he could be a wolf. His eyes are wolf-like, I think.

One other thing that has drawn me to this movie is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is producing it. If he is on board with the project, I am going to watch it, because he is my favourite actor. Everyday I see the Titanic, and "I'm the king of the world!" flashes through my mind.

I hope this movie lives up to my expectations! It will be in theatres on Friday, 11th March, 2011.

Sixteen-year-old Miranda Merchant is great at science. . .and not so great with boys. After major drama with her boyfriend and (now ex) best friend, she's happy to spend the summer on small, mysterious Selkie Island, helping her mother sort out her late grandmother's estate.

There, Miranda finds new friends and an island with a mysterious, mystical history, presenting her with facts her logical, scientific mind can't make sense of. She also meets Leo, who challenges everything she thought she knew about boys, friendship. . .and reality.

Is Leo hiding something? Or is he something that she never could have imagined?
