ARC Review: The Dark Light by Sara Walsh

Mia is torn between two guys—and two worlds—in this epic, romantic fantasy.

Mysterious lights have flickered above Crownsville for as long as Mia can remember. And as far as she’s concerned, that’s about the only interesting thing to happen in her small town.

That is, until Sol arrives. Mia’s not one to fall for just any guy, but she can’t get Sol—or the brilliant tattoo on his back—out of her mind.

Then Mia’s brother goes missing, and Mia’s convinced that Sol knows more than he’s sharing. But getting closer to Sol means reevaluating everything Mia once believed to be true. Because Sol’s not who Mia thought he was—and neither is she.

As far as this book goes, I really can't decide. The Dark Light seemed to switch genres halfway through, from a normal girl in a love triangle story, and catapulted me into a strange new world, that I'm not entirely sure I liked.

The story of young boys being kidnapped was interesting, but the mysterious new boy, Sol, showing up at the same time that the kidnappings began was too suspect. Mia's brother being the same age just led me to think he would be the next boy to be kidnapped... and voila, he was. The book did not lead me into too many *gasp* I can't believe that just happened moments, because it was just too predictable.

Mia was your typical teenage girl. She had wanted to be with one of her guy friends forever, but he never noticed... and then, when he did notice, she got bored and moved on to someone else. Mia's character was not the brave, strong, driven girl I wish she had been. Sadly, I found her slightly boring, and when she "forgot" that her little brother was missing because she was going too googly eyed over her latest crush, it bothered me. It was so unrealistic. Well, I suppose being transported to a new dimension that is sharing space with Earth is not exactly normal.

The world created by Sara Walsh was... interesting. I really cannot decide whether it was a really great, or a blah- we've-all-seen-this-before kind of world. The new dimension being taken over by Earth was intriguing, and the concept of demons making it unsafe to go out at night was fantastic, but it was extremely impractical. Why would Sol want to live in a world where he was trapped at night, always afraid of being killed?

Speaking of Sol, he was the best part of this book, without a doubt. I know it probably seems like I fangirl a lot, but ehehehhehe SOL is AMAZING. I think I'll just marry him now. He was adorable. So strong, and caring. The only thing I would have liked to have changed would be the relationship between Mia and Sol. It was obvious from page one (okay, maybe page 30), that Sol and Mia would fall in love, but they would not realize that the other loved them too. Like I said, this book was really predictable.

I loved the cover! That was the main reason why I started reading this book, but the book did not coincide with the cover at all!! The cover was definitely misleading, just as the sudden switching of genres was confusing.

Overall, this book was not my favourite. I am a bit confused by it all- the reason behind the story, the reason why the author did not delve deeper into the possibilities surrounding the intriguing blurb. If I was rating it, I would give it a three or a three and a half... I am just glad I didn't buy this book for $18 before being majorly disappointed.
